Fliyou in Moroccan tradition

A short guide to fliyou: where it comes from, how Moroccan homes use it and what to keep in mind.

Fliyou (فليو)

Fliyou (pennyroyal) is a winter aromatic herb, sometimes added in small amounts to tea. Its essential oil is for external use only.

How to use: A small sprig is occasionally added to the teapot by tradition, in very small amounts and not regularly. Avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding and for children.

The story of fliyou at the Moroccan attar

• In the souks of Fes, Marrakech and Essaouira, the attar (herbalist-grocer) displays herbs, spices and oils in sacks and bottles.
• Fliyou is one of the products Moroccans have known for generations, with ways of using it passed down in families.
• Names vary by region, between Arabic, Amazigh and Darija, but the customs are similar.
• Today the same traditional products come with clear labels and home delivery.

• Fliyou can be combined with hammam staples such as black soap and the kessa glove.
• Keep it simple: one or two regular steps beat many irregular ones.
